What is an RCD or Safety Switch?
RCD stands for Residual Current Device which is often referred to as an electrical Safety Switch.
RCDs monitor the flow of electrical current through a circuit and cut-off the supply if the flow is interrupted; Like when an extension cord is accidentally cut by an electric hedge trimmer.
The time it takes for an RCD to cut-off the supply of electricity by ‘tripping’ the switch, is measured in milliseconds. It is this speed that can mean the difference between life and death for a person who comes in contact with a live electrical circuit.
Why should I have my RCDs tested?
RCD Testing can identify a faulty Safety Switch, that if not replaced could result in serious injury or death.

Do I need a safety switch installed?
Safety Switches are a mandatory requirement in Queensland for all new buildings, rental properties, new homes and older homes as they are sold or significantly renovated.
All electrical circuits whether it be for lighting, power points, a pool pump or any other mains powered electrical supply, should have a safety switch installed.
Sadly there have been many deaths that would likely have been prevented if an RCD or Safety Switch had been installed and functioning correctly.
