3 types of air conditioning to help you stay cool in summer

Queensland is a great place to live but the heat of summer can be quite unbearable at times.

Thankfully, a man called Willis Carrier invented what is considered to be the first modern air conditioning unit. This invention was the start of a cool revolution.

Today, after many advancements in technology, refrigeration and energy saving methods, there are many types air conditioner systems for cooling and heating a range of applications, but we’ll just focus on our specialties.

So here are 3 types of air conditioning to help you stay cool in summer:

1. Split System

Split system air conditioning units have two main and separate components that work together to cool the room. The refrigerant compressor is most often located outside on a concrete footing or mounted to a wall using cantilever brackets.

The head or fan unit is mounted in a high position on an internal wall of the room which is to be cooled. These two components work together using electrical cables and refrigerant lines. The head unit also requires a drain hose to evacuate condensated water from the system.

Single split systems are suitable for single room cooling, but multi-split systems are available if more than one room needs to be cooled using this method.

2. Cassette

Cassette style split systems are similar to a standard split system, in that the compressor is mounted separately outside and the head unit (cassette), is hung from the ceiling.

The piping doesn’t need to be exposed as it is in some modern office installations, but can instead be concealed by a plasterboard ceiling leaving only the cassette face exposed for a cleaner look.

Due to the design of the air outlets, a cassette air conditioner also allows air to flow in four directions, providing more efficient and effective coverage of the area below.

3. Ducted

Ducted air conditioning allows for greater coverage of larger areas like schools, convention centres and office buildings. The refrigerant compressor is most often mounted on the roof of the building, with cool air and return air being pushed through a series of metal ducting.

As with cassette styled air conditioning, the metal ducting does not need to be exposed but can be concealed above a plasterboard ceiling to provide a clean look with only the vents being visible.

The angled vent style also allows for more efficient and effective dispersion of cool air into the room below.

That’s just a sample of three types of air conditioners that are available. As mentioned, there are other types of air conditioning and you can learn about them by clicking the air conditioner manufacturer logos below, or contacting the team at QMS Electrical.
