The heat produced from the Queensland sun means that many households like to enjoy the comfort of air conditioning in their home.

But there is nothing worse when summer turns up and your air conditioner is not functioning correctly.

The most important task you have leading into summer is to get your unit serviced to increase air quality and reduce health risks to vulnerable people who suffer from respiratory issues.

QMS Electrical are professional technicians that can help you with servicing, repairs, new installs, and routine maintenance to ensure your air conditioner is running efficiently.

Director Jason Brooks said not performing regular servicing and cleaning of air conditioner can not only reduce efficiency due to clogged and dirty filters but can also allow the build-up of mould.

“An air conditioner recycles all the air within a room so obviously all the dusty air-born particles accumulate within the filters and if you haven’t checked them, they get quite dirty,” Jason said.

“Most people neglect this, and the build-up of mould then recirculates pushing it back out to the room to further encourage a mould growth, which can be a serious health risk.”

An air conditioner filter should be cleaned once a month during summer with a professional clean and demould of the coils at the start or end of summer.

Not cleaning regularly can affect the efficiency of the machine.

“The cleaner you have it the freer it is to push that air through and the easier the machine operates and the quicker it heats up or cools down depending on what you want it to do,” Jason said.

There are two common sizes in Australia with a 2.5kw for a bedroom and a 7.1kw for a main living area.

The 2.5kW handles most average sized bedrooms except obviously a larger master bedroom and a 7.1kW will handle most living areas with exceptions to the rule but they are the two most common sizes.

Jason also recommends a split system in a residential property over a ducted system.

“Purely because split systems work out to be more efficient and cost effective when you are trying to cool off in bed at night,” Jason said.

“On a typical ducted system the main zone would not normally be required during the night however it would still be operating and wasting energy when used after hours.”

Ceiling fans can also be used in conjunction with an air conditioner to help distribute the cooler air further around the room.

Jason said ceiling fans are cheap to run and they enhance the benefits of an air con.
